Digital Transformation.... What does it actually mean?

The IT industry does love a buzz word and Digital transformation is the latest phrase that you will see plastered over every vendor’s site.  We’ve even seen one that talks about “Hyper-personalised Experiences” for customers.  So here at Interpretatus, we thought we would step back a little and talk about what we think it means, in practical terms, for the average company.

To simplify, Digital Transformation is taking a look at how the information flows through from orders coming into the company to the final product going out the to the customer.  Does the information flow directly from the order into the order processing system, shipping and dispatch and then into the accounts system? That’s what Digital Transformation is about. Making that data flow.

Most companies have spreadsheets somewhere in their business which are key. Capturing data and then sitting somewhere in a file share. This is where stepping back and looking at how the data flows can be of value to your business.

Obviously, the less you need to touch, change, or massage the data to get it into the next system, the quicker and more accurately the order can be processed.

Digital transformation doesn’t just apply to companies that have physical products that they sell. It can equally apply to service orientated companies as well. I am sure there are plenty of companies out there that record timecards for projects in spreadsheets and then try to calculate their billing with expenses in another spreadsheet and creating invoices in yet another….. Sound familiar?

So, in practical terms that is what the hype is about. It isn’t necessarily something new and shiny it is just about stepping back and looking at the flow of information around the organisation and looking for opportunities to use that information better with less human intervention.

There can certainly be benefits from this. Speeding up orders and billing can certainly improve cash flow, customer satisfaction and profitability in all sorts of organisations.

And of course, we can help. If you are interested in exploring how you can improve your business through better use of your data then we would be happy to have a sensible, understandable conversation with you.
